Doris in her element, connecting celebrities and vendors
Every winter, publicist and event planner extraordinaire Doris Bergman knew how to spread love and distribute it equally between the Grammys and the Academy Awards. In fact, she always chose Valentine’s Day as the midpoint between the two tentpole industry events to celebrate talent, professionals, and other luminaries in the entertainment industry. Ever the earth mother, she wanted to make sure everybody (including the press covering the festivities) was well fed and happy. She selected spacious and centrally located restaurants like Fig & Olive and La Bohème to do them in.
Doris believed everybody should have nice things, including the beneficiaries of the causes she believed in, particularly Los Angeles news presenter Christine Divine’s–Fox 11 News’s Wednesday’s Child, which helps children in the city’s foster care system get adopted by loving families.
She was also adept at connecting people whom she felt could help one another. When I began covering events for Lucire in the early 2000s and was working hard to make my mark as a freelance writer elsewhere, she introduced me to publicists, small business owners, and talent looking for writers able to tell a good story. I was first introduced to her by Lisa Coccuza at a luxury lounge they collaborated on for the Latin Grammys the early 2000s. There were loads of wonderful vendors, but the best takeaway was that I was as welcome as any of the high-profile writers there. From then on, she supported my efforts for Lucire as well as those from other reporters covering the winter awards’ season, the Emmy Awards, and the George López Celebrity Golf Classic.
