Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Felicity Huffman, Queen Latifah and Jessica Biel were honoured for their charitable work at Variety’s Power of Women ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Friday.
Berry, wearing a little black dress by Roland Mouret, was honoured for her work at the Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic violence intervention programme in southern Los Angeles.
Berry says that both she and her mother were victims of domestic violence, and that it also impacts the children. Her work at the Center, she says, resonated more with a ‘deep connection’ because she has been through domestic violence herself.
Both Heigl and Huffman were recognized for their work for breast cancer charities. Huffman’s sister had encountered breast cancer and says she found hope in being part of the solution.
Latifah’s work as founder of the Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation, which provides financial support to students, was honoured at the event. The Foundation was created in memory of her brother.
Biel received her honour for her work for Charity: Water—which included climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to raise funds—with her award announced by her friend Jennifer Garner.
Celebrities present included Biel’s fiancé Justin Timberlake, Anne Heche, Ashley Greene, Stacy Keibler and George Clooney, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
