Is Ryanair’s 2009 calendar, featuring 13 of its flight attendants in swimwear photographed by Mike Rosenthal in Spain, appropriate?
The airline has come under fire for its 2009 calendar, as it did for its 2008 one last year, with its critics accusing it of sexism.
Criticisms centre around Ryanair’s objectification of the flight attendants. Last year, the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs noted that there are numerous men in the same sector who have not appeared in similar calendars.
In a cheeky move, the airline is sending this year’s edition to some of its critics.
At least €100,000 of the proceeds from each €10 calendar are being donated to the Simon Community, a Dublin-based charity helping the homeless.
Seven hundred women voluntarily applied to be part of the calendar, according to the airline. A mere four from Ryanair’s home country of Ireland applied, with one chosen, but she was ultimately unavailable.
