Beyoncé has performed at the United Nations’ General Assembly Hall in New York, in advance of World Humanitarian Day on August 19. The concert was designed to promote the day, and to get people to pledge that they will do something for another person with mass social network messages through its website, which aims to ‘send the biggest social media message in history’.
Beyoncé performed her song ‘I Was Here’, which ties in with the World Humanitarian Day promotion.
Among the audience at the UN were actress Julia Stiles, R&B singer the Dream, and songwriter Diane Warren. Anderson Cooper was the MC.
The UN had declared August 19 World Humanitarian Day in 2008, in memory of 22 UN workers killed in Baghdad in 2003.
Beyoncé said at her concert, ‘I’d like to ask everyone to make sure they’re a part of August 19th. It’s such a beautiful, beautiful day, and I’d like to honour the 22 people who lost their lives. God bless you all. Thank you so much for having me.’
