Will Gisèle Bündchen keep her crown as the top-earning model in 2011?

Above Natalia Vodianova, appearing here for Etam lingerie, is expected to remain in the top 10 for annual earnings, based on Vicki Matias’s calculations.

Every year, Forbes announces its table of the world’s top-earning models for the year. This year, we thought we’d try to make an educated guess on who might be in first place for 2011.
Last year, it was the gorgeous Brazilian beauty Gisele Bündchen, who secured her place as the highest paid model since 2004. She reportedly made an estimated US$25 million during 2009–2010 and is rated as the 16th richest woman in the entertainment industry with an estimated US$150 million fortune. It looks like this year will continue to be just as lucrative for her. Giving birth to her son has not slowed her down. Her very popular Ipanema Flip Flop brand is thriving, and she has already done 2011 photo shoots for Vogue China and Vogue Paris as well as signing on a new contract to be the new face of fashion house Balenciaga. She has also featured in the H&M spring–summer 2011 catalogue and the Vivara jewellery campaign.
Heidi Klum and Kate Moss were second and third, with US$16 million and US$9 million respectively. There’s no stopping Klum, a busy Mum of four, who has just wrapped up shooting the 2011 ad campaigns for European cosmetics brand Astor, for which she became the new face and creative adviser in 2010. She is also working on a new TV show called Seriously Funny Kids, which is due to launch this year, and which she will host. Her role as host of Project Runway is going ahead as planned. It was announced by AOL that a partnership with Klum and Full Picture Entertainment—the producers of Project Runway—has been struck up to create digital content ‘focusing on fashion, beauty, parenting, arts and crafts, relationships and lifestyle.’ And to top it all off, her fragrance Shine is due out this September.
Kate Moss kicked off the year with news of her engagement to rocker Jamie Hince. Since then she has appeared in the Vogue Eyewear collection shot by Mario Testino, the Longchamp spring 2011 handbag campaign, and is the new face of Christian Dior’s Addict lipstick range. She also has her $3 million Topshop contract.
Last year Adriana Lima’s US$7·5 million came close to Doutzen Kroes’s US$6 million. Adriana Lima was recently seen posing in West Hollywood for the launch of the 2011 Victoria’s Secret Swim collection with models Alessandra Ambrosio and Candice Swanepoel. She also promoted a super sexy line of lingerie for Victoria’s Secret Valentine’s 2011 edition, as well as making the cover of Vogue Brasil’s February edition. Doutzen Kroes, along with fellow Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr, did not walk the highly anticipated 2010 Victoria’s Secret show due to both being pregnant with their first children. Just two months after giving birth to her baby boy, she is already back into her bikini body and ready for work, having retained her L’Oréal contract, but, unfortunately, not her Calvin Klein or Tiffany’s contracts from last year.
Alessandria Ambrósio and Natalia Vodianova came head to head last year in a tie of US$5·5 million. Alessandria worked the Milano catwalk for Dolce & Gabbana’s women’s autumn–winter 2011–12 collection, and featured on the February cover of Harper’s Bazaar in Spain. Natalia Vodianova has posed for the cover of Vogue México’s January issue, as well as in the stunning Etam Lingerie photo shoot. She is currently working on her first leading role in a movie opposite Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Belle du Seigneur, based on Albert Cohen’s best-selling 1968 French novel, which is due out in 2012.
Daria Werbowy, who came in eighth last year with US$4·5 million, has held on tight to her Lancôme contract, which she has had since 2005. She starred in the new Lancôme ad for Hypnôse Senses perfume, as well as in Vogue’s April 2011 ‘Bodies of Work’ shoot, alongside fellow models Lara Stone and Natalia Vodianova.
Miranda Kerr gave birth to her son Flynn Christopher Bloom in January. It does not look like she has a heavy workload scheduled for the year; she is probably busy enough with her Kora Organics skin care range, which she began developing three years ago. The range is exclusively stocked through all David Jones department stores in Australia.
Carolyn Murphy, who came in at tenth last year, with her estimated earnings of US$3·5 million, has jump-started her year with several magazine shoots, as well as making the cover for Muse while appearing for Gap’s spring–summer campaign. She has featured once again as an ambassador for Estée Lauder in its most recent Sensuous Perfume campaign, including Elizabeth Hurley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hilary Rhoda.
Both Gisèle Bündchen and Heidi Klum have diverse and very lucrative investments and contracts, but it looks like, once again, Bündchen will soar to the top of the income charts, especially with her new Balenciaga deal. It looks as though Kate Moss’s recent endorsements may see her climb the charts even further and she may even pose some threat to Klum’s title of second.
It looks to be a good year for Adriana Lima, Daria Werbowy and Natalia Vodianova, but a slow start for Alessandra Ambrosio. Daria Werbowy may go up one spot above Alessandra Ambrosio, but remain behind Natalia Vodianova.
It is quite likely that, with the birth of her son, Miranda Kerr will be taking a quiet year and this may see a shift in the charts, with Carolyn Murphy taking her place as ninth, and Kerr as tenth. But I’m sure she won’t mind, especially as she now has her gorgeous baby boy, and, of course, let’s not forget Orlando Bloom as her husband.—Vicki Matias

  4. yes Gisele will because she is one of the few who is a business woman, not just a model. Her ipanema sandals are the most sold in the world! and her skin care line is thriving and she owns a hotel in Brazil. PLus add to that ALL the tons of lucrative modeling work she does and she is on top.
